Mammillaria bocasana ‘Fred’ Grafted is not a normal-looking Mammillaria cactus. Its strange clustered shape, uneven heads and bumpy growth are exactly what make this cultivar interesting to cactus collectors.

The upper Mammillaria ‘Fred’ growth is joined to an upright cactus rootstock. Instead of forming the regular rounded or cylindrical shape seen in many Mammillaria cacti, 'Fred' can develop irregular, swollen and knobby growth. As the plant develops, its overall shape may continue to change.

The plant shown is a live grafted specimen. Head count, cluster width, colour tone and rootstock height naturally vary according to current nursery stock.

Why It Is Grafted

A grafted cactus contains two joined cactus sections.

The Mammillaria bocasana 'Fred' growing at the top is called the scion. The upright green cactus below it is the rootstock.

The visible graft gives the unusual Fred growth an elevated display and creates a distinctive two-part cactus shape. The rootstock supports the upper grafted section.

The graft joint should be handled carefully. Avoid squeezing, bending or repeatedly touching the upper cactus cluster.

Light

Mammillaria bocasana Fred needs strong bright light.

Place it near a bright window, on a well-lit balcony or in another location with plenty of natural light. Morning sunlight is a good option.

In Lahore and other hot areas of Pakistan, protect the cactus from sudden intense afternoon sunlight during peak summer. A cactus coming from nursery shade can develop sun damage if it is moved directly into extreme heat.

Introduce stronger sunlight gradually.

A permanently dark room is not suitable for healthy long-term cactus growth.

Water

Allow the cactus growing mix to dry completely before watering again.

Do not water according to a fixed daily schedule. Check the potting mix first. When it has dried, water the plant and allow extra water to drain freely.

The next watering should only be given after the mix dries again.

During warmer weather, a small cactus pot may dry faster. During cooler months, the soil can remain moist for longer, so watering should be reduced.

Constant wetness is one of the biggest risks for a grafted cactus. Do not leave the pot standing in water.

Soil

Use a gritty and fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix.

The growing medium should release extra water quickly. A cactus mix containing coarse drainage materials such as pumice or perlite is more suitable than heavy garden soil.

Always use a pot with a drainage hole.

Dense soil that remains wet for several days can create poor conditions around the rootstock.
