Yellow Grafted Moon Cactus is a colourful live cactus with a bright yellow crown growing above a tall green cactus rootstock. The strong yellow colour, unusual grafted form and clustered upper growth make it an eye-catching plant for cactus collections, bright windows, office desks and decorative plant shelves.

The colourful upper cactus is a form of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, widely known as Moon Cactus. In the plant shown, the yellow crown has developed several offsets around the main scion, creating a wider and fuller appearance.

Yellow Moon Cactus can develop offsets around its colourful crown. University of Arkansas Extension notes that grafted moon cacti branch freely and can form numerous offsets.

These small yellow growths may gradually change the appearance of the upper cactus. Some specimens have a simple rounded crown, while others develop a fuller clustered form like the plant shown in the photo.

Sunlight

Keep the Yellow Grafted Moon Cactus in bright indirect light.

A bright window, well-lit office, covered patio or protected balcony can work well. NC State recommends bright indirect sunlight and warns that too much direct sun can scorch grafted varieties.

Gentle morning sunlight can be introduced carefully.

During the hot Lahore summer, do not suddenly place a nursery-grown Moon Cactus in intense afternoon sunlight. The bright yellow scion is more sensitive to harsh sun exposure.

A dark indoor corner is also not suitable. The green rootstock needs enough light to support the grafted upper cactus.

Water

Water only after the cactus growing mix has dried completely. NC State recommends sparse watering and allowing the soil to dry between waterings, with even less water during the winter dormant period.

Check the potting mix before adding water. Once the soil is dry, water properly and allow excess water to drain from the pot.

Wait for the mix to dry again before the next watering.

During cooler weather, the pot may remain moist for longer, so reduce watering.

Constantly wet soil can create root and fungal problems, particularly when drainage is poor.
